There are places where tradition feels very close to the surface, and Blair Atholl is one of them.

The Atholl Gathering is shaped by the presence of the Atholl Highlanders, a ceremonial regiment based at Blair Castle and described by Blair Castle as Europe’s only remaining private army. Their connection to the Duke of Atholl, the castle, and the surrounding estate adds another layer of history to an already powerful Highland Games tradition.

Watching them move through the field, with the pipes carrying through the air, made the event feel less like a performance and more like something still alive. Around the ceremony, people watched, waited, talked, moved between the stalls, followed the competitions, and gathered along the edges of the field.

This journal note is a small impression from that day - colour, sound, ceremony and people, held together by a place with its own history.
